Modern Foreign Languages
We aim to enable students across all age and ability ranges to study foreign languages with success and pleasure.
Foreign language lessons are lively places of learning with a variety of activities going on. Teachers predominantly use the foreign language in lessons to give pupils as much exposure as possible to the language that they are learning. The Department has pioneered some new techniques in language teaching, which have been published by a major educational publisher and generated great interest from other schools nationwide.
The Department has four dedicated classrooms, including a modern state of the art digitised multimedia language laboratory. To enhance their studies at school, GCSE and 6th Form students have access at home to the curiously named but invaluable Kerboodle on-line resources.
In the Year 7 pupils will take French or Spanish as their first modern language. They will then add a German in Years 8 and 9. The school’s policy is that pupils take at least one of these languages at GCSE level and indeed they may pursue both of their modern languages to GCSE and A level, if they wish.
For all public examinations the AQA specification is followed.
