Cricket Report : 1st XI Versus MCC : 11 May 2017
The annual match between the 1st XI and the MCC was played at East Lancs CC on Thursday 11th May 2017. Having lost quite heavily the previous week to another adult select XI, the ’40 Club’, the team were very keen to make amends.
This they certainly did, and recorded a famous victory! The MCC were invited to bat, and despite some quite tight bowling and much improved fielding from the QEGS team, posted a score of 194 for 3wickets. The MCC took the field in confident mood, and despite a solid start from Jarvis Davies and Qasim Shah, both talented Yr 10 players, the school team started to lose wickets. At a score of 67 for 3, Rehan Zore from Year 8 joined Qasim Shah at the crease, and between them they changed the course of the match putting on a partnership of 105. Rehan scored 26 runs before he was out, but the maturity he showed in supporting Qasim was quite outstanding. Qasim’s performance on the other hand was exceptional; his levels of skill and concentration against some current former professional cricketers, was wonderful to see, and when he reached his century, he received a well-deserved standing ovation from all involved.
Unfortunately, Qasim was not able to see the innings through, but after some shaky moments the match reached the last over, where Harry Newman struck a powerful six to seal a memorable win.
Whilst everyone who took part should be congratulated, the main plaudits must go to Qasim, who as a result of his ‘Man of the Match’ performance has been invited by the MCC to spend a day with them at Lords, the home of English cricket.
